Meals on Wheels in Volusia County: Your Questions Answered

Tue, Jul 18, 2017 at 5:35PM

Why is the Meals on Wheels program so important in Volusia County?
Meals on Wheels steps in to ensure that Volusia County seniors have access to nutritious meals. Proper nutrition is not only necessary for senior’s health, but also for their ability to remain independently living at home for as long as possible. Millions of seniors experience social isolation each year in our country, and Meals on Wheels combats that as well. Daily food deliveries provide one on one interaction, as well as a watchful eye for our senior’s safety. These safety checks ensure that medical emergencies don’t go unnoticed.

How can I receive lunch from the Meals on Wheels program?
There are 2 ways to receive meals. The Meals on Wheels program offers home delivery to homebound seniors or lunch service at Neighborhood Meals Sites for those who are mobile. Volusia County has 7 Neighborhood Meal Sites. Locations include Deltona, Deland, Holly Hill, New Smyrna Beach, Orange City, Ormond Beach, and Port Orange. Sites open at 8:00 a.m. with hot, nutritious lunches served at 11:30. Seniors are encouraged to spend time socializing with others, with activities such as cards and bingo. Reservations are required.

How can I find out if my loved one qualifies?
Many seniors are eligible for meals through funded programs, but funds are subject to availability. Please contact the Volusia County Council on Aging at 386-253-4700 extension 225.

Can Meals on Wheels provide meals for a short period of time?
Yes, home ordered meals are available for purchase on a short term basis. Nutritious lunches can be provided for those recovering from illness or injury and are not able to cook for themselves.

Are meals delivered on weekends?
No. The Meals on Wheels program only delivers Monday through Friday, but they offer frozen meals that are delivered during the week to be eaten on the weekend or over holidays.

How are meals delivered?
Volunteers deliver meals between 10:45 and 1:00. Someone must be at home to accept the meal as they will not leave it by the front door. Meals on Wheels volunteers are trained to offer not only a friendly smile, but also perform a daily safety check.

How can I volunteer?
Contact Emily at 386-253-4700 x253 to volunteer your time to Meals on Wheels. Volunteers can donate as little as 2 hours per week and make a huge difference to those in need.
